Where to Go for a Sunday Lunch in Athens

by Katerina Vnatsioy

A bubbling giouvetsi fresh out of the oven, slow-cooked kokkinisto melting in the pot, and juicy burgers whose aroma alone could fill you up. Sunday food in Greece is generous, comforting, and full of that warmth we crave a little more on weekends. Sunday lunch belongs to Greek cuisine – as it should.

Tavernier

There’s no table more “Sunday” than the one set by the Konstantopoulou family. It feels like stepping into your mother’s dining room, waiting for the giouvetsi to come out of the oven. If the sun is out, sit in the courtyard and dig into their homemade pastitsio, melt-in-your-mouth beef cheeks in tomato sauce, plump meatballs, and definitely the cheese-and-pastourma pie (pitaraki).

Sunday food means warmth — and for me, that translates directly to a steaming plate of pappardelle with kavourmas. It’s the restaurant’s signature dish, and one bite takes you straight to Sunday, even if it’s a dull Monday.

Kyveli

In Kypseli, Sundays shine brightest at Kyveli. After the morning stroll, locals gather here, at sun-drenched tables overlooking Agios Georgios Square. The table fills with Greek meze — the kolokythokeftedes (zucchini fritters) are a must — sizzling skillets (don’t miss the one with mushrooms and soutzouki), perfectly grilled meatballs, and the now-famous chicken harakiri (served on a metal skewer).

Kitsoulas

Since 1946, this Halandri tavern has been dishing out legendary giouvetsi, pastitsio, and moussaka. You’ll find all the classics of Greek home cooking here — but since Sunday lunch at Kitsoulas is practically an institution, make a reservation early if you want to catch the kokkinisto.

Ama Lachei

I’ve been coming here since it first opened, and somehow it just keeps getting better — every visit surprises me. I used to go for its beautiful courtyard, but now I go for the grilled meatballs with baked potatoes, the legume stew, the excellent cheese selection (always order the Tinos volaki), the dreamy fava with lemon marmalade, capers, nuts, and spring onions, and the perfectly crispy fries. If you spot the veal kokkinisto with kritharaki from Serres — say yes.
