24km long tramline to be added to Thessaloniki

Building up its public transport network to be more flexible and effective towards the needs of citizens and visitors, the Council of Thessaloniki Public Transport is planning to add a public 24km long tramline in the city. According to reports, the new line will have 43 stops, five of which will sub-serve to the under-construction Metro route, five terminals, a 45-hectare depot and electrification by overhead cables. The cost of the project rise at 20 to 22 million euros per km, a total of 515.76 million euros, while nearly 172.700 commuters are estimated to be using this new line daily.

A tender is expected to launch by the end of the year for construction to begin by the end of 2016.
