MuSifanto 2026: When Sifnos Becomes One Great Musical Community

By Dimitra Grous

Far more than a classical music festival, MuSifanto is a celebration of music education, artistic collaboration and community. For the past thirty years, it has brought together young musicians, internationally acclaimed performers and visitors on the enchanting island of Sifnos.

Some festivals are remembered for the excellence of their programme; others for the spirit they create. MuSifanto, on Sifnos, succeeds in offering both. Lovingly crafted through the dedication of volunteers and the passion of its organisers, it combines a warm, intimate atmosphere with an impressively high artistic standard. Perhaps that is why, year after year, it attracts not only distinguished musicians from Greece and abroad, but also a loyal community of participants and visitors who return time and again.

Above all, however, MuSifanto was founded with a singular purpose: to inspire the children who spend the winter months studying music on the islands of the Aegean. It is this vision that makes the festival truly exceptional. On Sifnos, as on many neighbouring islands, the Music Workshops organised by the Association Friends of the Greek Island and the Sea provide young people with invaluable musical education throughout the year.

Like many Greek islands, Sifnos feels wonderfully close during the summer, yet remarkably remote once winter arrives. Strong Aegean winds gather force, ferry services become less frequent and travelling to and from the island becomes considerably more challenging. It is here that the story begins, exactly thirty years ago.

The story began in 1992, when Fragkiski Psacharopoulou-Karori -a musician, music educator and producer of classical music radio and television programmes for children and young audiences- founded the Association Friends of the Greek Island and the Sea, a voluntary, non-profit organisation. Her vision was to create a true "island of culture": a place where children growing up on Greece's islands could discover, embrace and study classical music while remaining deeply connected to the rich musical traditions of their own communities. From that moment onwards, dedicated teachers began travelling throughout the winter to islands including Sifnos, Kasos, Limnos, Ikaria, Serifos and Kea, often making the journey despite challenging weather and rough seas. It is a remarkable commitment, one that, for more than three decades, has ensured that island children enjoy opportunities that their peers in Greece's larger cities often take for granted. Yet the programme has always been about far more than learning an instrument. Through the Music Workshops, generations of young people have discovered the joy of making music together, becoming part of close-knit musical communities that have gradually flourished on each island.

The Association also recognized that inspiration is as important as education. Outstanding concerts and encounters with accomplished musicians would allow students to glimpse what might one day be possible. And because travelling to major concert halls is rarely easy for children living on the islands, MuSifanto chose a different path: rather than asking young audiences to travel to the music, it brought the concert hall to them.

The impact of this remarkable initiative is more evident today than ever before. This year's edition of MuSifanto coincides with the 30th anniversary of the "Fragkiski Psacharopoulou-Karori" Music Workshop of Sifnos -three decades of dedicated work that have left an enduring mark on the island's cultural life.

MuSifanto is, therefore, much more than one of Greece's leading summer classical music festivals. From 29 June to 6 July, it becomes a celebration of music education, collaboration and community. It also offers a distinctive holiday experience for families visiting Sifnos, allowing parents to combine a summer escape with enriching musical opportunities for their children.

The festival's mornings are devoted to learning and creativity. Participants can join two choirs -an adult community choir and a children's choir- alongside masterclasses in guitar, piano and trumpet. Young guitarists also come together to form a guitar orchestra, gaining ensemble experience and musical opportunities that are exceptional, even by the standards of Greece's largest cities.

As evening falls, the focus shifts to the concert stage. Students from the masterclasses have the opportunity to hear their teachers -distinguished performers from Greece and abroad- in recital, before later sharing the stage with them in collaborative performances. These inspiring encounters are among the festival's defining moments, transforming learning into a truly shared artistic experience. Together with the much-loved Musical Walk and the student concerts that bring the festival to its close, these performances also offer visitors a memorable cultural experience, enriching a stay on Sifnos with music of the highest calibre. In doing so, MuSifanto has become an important part of the island's cultural identity, firmly establishing Sifnos as one of the Aegean's most distinctive summer destinations for music and the arts.

This year's MuSifanto is united by the theme "Music for Everyone", a spirit that resonates throughout the entire festival. From concerts and masterclasses to its many parallel events, music becomes a shared language, bringing people together through participation, connection and creative collaboration.

The festival opens with a special anniversary concert celebrating the 30th anniversary of the "Fragkiski Psacharopoulou-Karori" Music Workshop of Sifnos, featuring both former and current students in a tribute to three decades of musical education on the island. The programme continues with performances by the C2 Cello Duo (Leslie Jones & Nora Karakousoglou), guitar recitals by Duo Melis (Alexis Mouzourakis & Susana Prieto) and D&A GuitarDuo (Dimitris Kourzakis & Angelos Botsis), a recital for violin and piano by Danae Papamatthaiou-Matschke and Uwe Matschke and a concert by the Harris Lambrakis Quartet.

Among this year's highlights is the participation of the ACG Community Choir of The American College of Greece, conducted by Efi Minakouli. The choir will perform alongside pupils from the Sifnos Primary School, while also taking part in MuSifanto En Plo ("MuSifanto Afloat"), transforming the ferry journey from Lavrio to Sifnos into an unforgettable musical experience. Another much-loved tradition is the Musical Walk, where audiences follow one of Sifnos's historic footpaths from Apollonia to Kato Petali, pausing along the way to enjoy a series of intimate performances set against the island's natural landscape.

The festival programme is further enriched by the presentation of the book The Song of Our Times by George Papapavlou and Claude Laurent (Alexandria Publications), alongside two exhibitions of children's artwork.

This is MuSifanto: a classical music festival with an open heart, where everyone has a place and where the love of music becomes a lifelong companion. And so, once again this summer, we'll board the ferry to Sifnos and meet there once more. We wouldn't miss it for the world!
