Athens needs little introduction. It is one of those cities that carries its past so vividly, so insistently, that it becomes an inseparable part of its present. Perhaps that is why it continues to inspire, not only through its monuments, but through the ways they are reimagined within the fabric of the modern city.

A new large-scale mural now joins this contemporary narrative of Athens, rising in the neighborhood of Psyrri. Created by the Spanish duo PichiAvo and titled “An Offering to Athens”, the work, true to its name, stands as a symbolic tribute to the city.

PichiAvo are no newcomers to the street art scene. They first crossed paths within Valencia’s graffiti culture, and in 2007 chose to develop a shared artistic language, one that moves fluidly between the street and the studio, blending graffiti with elements of classical art. “We come from Spain, a Mediterranean country, so Roman and Greek history are part of our cultural fabric. As artists, we have always sought a distinct identity of our own, and so we decided to merge our roots in graffiti with a part of our heritage”, they explain. They emphasize that ancient Greek mythology and sculpture serve as narrative tools in their work: “Through mythology and classical sculpture, we learned how to tell stories from the past, stories from which, even today, one can still learn so much”.

Rising over 15 meters high, the mural places the goddess Athena at its heart, alongside the myth of the olive tree. Poseidon struck the rock of the Acropolis with his trident, bringing forth water, a spring, while Athena gifted the city its first olive tree, a source of nourishment, oil, and wood. The gods deemed her offering the more valuable, and so the city was given her name.

“It is one of the myths we hold especially dear. Through Athena’s offering to the people, you begin to understand why she was more than a warrior; she was the goddess of wisdom. Perhaps the myth also serves as a gentle
reminder to the people of Athens: that their city can remain a point of departure for wise choices yet to come”.

The mural in Athens stands among PichiAvo’s most distinctive works, largely because of the intention behind it. Set in Psyrri, it becomes part of a neighborhood deeply intertwined with street culture and contemporary urban expression, and is expected to emerge as a new visual landmark, not only for visitors, but for the city’s own residents.

“Most of the time, we work on commissions for companies or festivals. In this case, however, we chose to give something back to Athens for all that it has offered us culturally. We want the people who pass by this wall, and learn that we come from Spain, to feel proud of their culture, one that continues to inspire others. Sometimes we forget where we come from and what forms our foundation, so perhaps this piece can serve as a reminder to modern Greeks that they offer inspiration to the world, to art, and to creation itself”.
