Located in the heart of Athens, the Maria Callas Museum is the first museum in the world dedicated entirely to the life, work and legacy of the iconic soprano Maria Callas. Managed by Technopolis City of Athens, the museum offers a contemporary cultural experience designed not only for opera lovers, but for anyone interested in the story of an extraordinary woman who transformed the world of performing arts.

Housed in a beautifully restored neoclassical building, the museum invites visitors to explore Callas through an innovative permanent exhibition that combines original artefacts, audiovisual material, interactive installations and immersive environments. Rather than following a conventional chronological narrative, the exhibition reveals different facets of her personality, artistic journey and public image, encouraging visitors to discover Callas at their own pace.

The museum’s growing collection includes more than 1,200 items, among them personal objects, stage costumes, rare recordings, photographs, letters, press archives and audiovisual material, many of which have been generously donated by private collectors and cultural institutions. In 2025, the museum received a Special Commendation at the European Museum of the Year Awards (EMYA), recognising its innovative exhibition design and its ability to create a compelling museum experience around one of the most celebrated figures in opera history.

Spread across two exhibition floors, the museum experience begins with an immersive introduction to Callas’ voice and stage presence, featuring scenographic spaces inspired by some of her most celebrated roles. The journey continues through thematic galleries that explore her career, artistic choices, relationships, public persona and lasting influence on contemporary culture. Interactive displays, listening stations and digital archives allow visitors to engage directly with her story and artistic legacy.

The experience continues on the ground floor, where visitors can explore the Museum Shop and unwind at Café “La Divina”, extending their encounter with Maria Callas beyond the galleries. 

Alongside its permanent exhibition, the Maria Callas Museum functions as a vibrant cultural hub, hosting temporary exhibitions, performances, concerts, talks, screenings, workshops and masterclasses throughout the year.  Through its educational programs, family activities and initiatives for diverse audiences, the museum seeks to make Maria Callas’ legacy relevant and meaningful for contemporary visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you are discovering Maria Callas for the first time or revisiting her remarkable story, the museum offers a unique opportunity to encounter the woman behind the legend, in the city she always considered the starting point of her artistic journey.
