Archaeologists have accessed the third chamber in the Amphipolis tomb, after clearing the way behind the recently revealed caryatid statues. Unlike the previous two chambers, the third one was about half-full with dirt.
According to the announcement issued by the Ministry of Culture, the archaeological team proceeds with extreme caution, as there are concerns regarding the tomb’s structural integrity due to visible corrosion and cracks. Support beams and other structural measures are of the outmost necessity before the digging continues. Security measures around the digging site have also been increased, with a security system and floodlights installed by the municipality of Amphipolis, in order to assist in the survey of the tomb’s exterior.
In response to various talks and blares about the tomb, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras stressed that “we will only listen to the excavator and her findings”, noting that the importance of the findings extends well beyond Greece and as such “we must be serious and laconic”.
