The repercussions of the austerity programmes in Greece were pointed out by Alexis Tsipras, leader of the main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA), during his opening speech at the debate of candidates for the European Commission presidency, where he also stressed that the results of such policy must not be experienced by anyone else in Europe.

Mr. Tsipras called on the other candidates, mainly the candidates supported by the parties supporting this policy, to respond whether what is taking place in Greece is a story of success or tragedy. He also asked for the European citizens’ support to the Left, in order to put an end to austerity and make democratic values resurface.
