Nine delicious spots for seafood on the go

By Konstantina Voulgarelis

Seafood has long been associated with white-tablecloth dining and traditional seaside tavernas, where the scent of salt and grilled octopus drifts in from the water. Yet across Athens, a new generation of kitchens is reimagining the catch of the day in a far more playful form: street food designed to be eaten with your hands and enjoyed down to the very last bite.

When we think of street food, our minds instinctively wander to burgers, sandwiches and souvlaki wraps. Something comforting and indulgent, tucked inside pillowy bread, layered with sauces, herbs and just enough mess to make it memorable. It’s the kind of food we devour on the move, after a late-night drink, between errands, on a lunch break, or sprawled on the sofa during a slow weekend afternoon.

But can seafood truly slip into that role?

Athens proves it can. Across the city, inventive cooks are giving fish and shellfish the street-food treatment with remarkable flair. Think crisp cod burgers tucked into soft buns, trout wraps bright with fresh herbs, decadent lobster rolls dripping with butter, and lobster tacos carrying just the right touch of heat and citrus. For seafood lovers, these are the kinds of dishes that leave fingers gloriously sticky and appetites entirely unrestrained.

For Balık Ekmek at “Lonja tis Geitonias”

Few street foods are as deeply woven into the rhythm of Istanbul as the beloved balık ekmek -literally, “bread with fish”. Sold all across the city by the Bosphorus, this iconic Turkish sandwich finds a particularly satisfying interpretation at Lonja tis Geitonias in Athens. Here, delicate sea bass fillet is layered inside rustic country bread alongside fresh and pickled onions, crisp lettuce, parsley and a light tarragon mayonnaise made with organic herbs. The bread is pressed on the griddle with fresh butter until golden and fragrant, giving every bite a rich, comforting warmth. Finish it the proper way: with generous olive oil, a squeeze of lemon, and just enough salt to sharpen the flavors.

For Smoked Trout and Eel Wraps at “Prigipas”

In the restless heart of Exarchia, Prigipas has built something of a cult reputation for its extravagant wraps, packed with every imaginable kind of meat. Yet among the endless options, two seafood creations quietly steal the spotlight.

The first stars smoked trout fillet from Louros, folded into warm flatbread with velvety fava purée, capers, tomato, caramelized onions, crisp lettuce and a cooling yogurt sauce. The second, richer and more unexpected, features smoked eel fillet from Lake Pamvotida, deeply aromatic and delicately smoky. Both fish arrive directly from the Ioannina region and are smoked in a dedicated smokehouse, giving them a remarkable depth of flavor that lingers long after the final bite. For the full experience, opt for the corn pita, whose earthy sweetness pairs beautifully with the smoked fish. And if hunger has truly taken hold, do as the regulars do and order them tucked inside fluffy sandwich bread instead. 23 Harilaou Trikoupi str., Exarchia +30 2114050070

For Lobster Tempura Tacos at “Lobby”

Tucked beside the sleek façade of the Electra Metropolis hotel, Lobby has become one of those all-day Athens spots where cocktails flow easily and small plates invite lingering conversations long after sunset. Among its most tempting bites are the lobster tempura tacos: delicate tortillas filled with crisp lobster tempura, pickled cabbage, silky mayonnaise, horseradish, fresh pico de gallo, fried onions and a bright squeeze of lime. Equally compelling is the sea bass tempura version, layered with tomato, red cabbage and a smoky chipotle mayonnaise that adds just the right amount of heat. Best of all, you can enjoy them at the bar with a drink in hand or take them to go for an indulgent stroll through the city center.

For Lobster Rolls and Tuna Melt at “Nosh”

At Nosh, indulgence arrives tucked inside impossibly soft, butter-glossed brioche buns. The menu revolves around lavish variations of lobster-filled brioche, from the Lobster Roll Maine, brightened with mayonnaise and lime, to the richer Lobster Roll Nosh, layered with velvety hollandaise and fresh chives. For those in no mood for restraint, there’s even the option of adding caviar. Seafood lovers will find plenty more to tempt them. The Shrimp Roll combines sweet shrimp with fennel, mayonnaise, spicy chorizo and crisp leek chips for a playful balance of freshness and heat. The Crab Sliders, filled with crab, avocado mousse and lime, lean lighter and silkier, while the now-famous Tuna Melt, packed with tuna, capers, pickles, mayonnaise, and molten cheddar, delivers pure comfort with a distinctly elevated touch. And then there are the Sicilian-style arancini: crisp golden spheres hiding a rich lobster and shrimp bisque at their center.

For Fried Seafood Cones at “Zisis”

At Zisis, the beloved Volos-born seafood spot, street food becomes exactly what it promises to be: fish served straight into your hands, wrapped in a paper cone like something pulled fresh from a bustling harbor market. This unapologetically casual seafood haunt specializes in crisp, freshly fried bites meant for eating on the move. The cones arrive overflowing with tiny silver fish and seaside favorites: whitebait, anchovies, sardines, calamari, baby shrimp, cod, fish croquettes, breaded shrimp and even crab claws made with surimi. Everything is paired with golden fries, pickled cabbage and carrot slaw, generous wedges of lemon and cooling sauces that balance the salty crunch of the fry station.

For Fried Calamari Wraps at “Hoocut”

You don’t need to be fasting to crave Hoocut’s calamari wrap, thankfully, it’s available all year round. Here, tender calamari is sliced into crisp golden rings and wrapped inside handmade, pillowy flatbread alongside tomato, creamy taramasalata, spicy sauce, onion, dill, fennel, coriander and a dusting of paprika. The result is unexpectedly vibrant: the briny sweetness of the squid balanced by fresh herbs, smoky spice and the velvety richness of the fish roe spread.

For Hawaiian-Style Sushi at “Noa Poké”

At Noa Poké, seafood takes a fresher, lighter turn in the form of Hawaiian-inspired poké bowls. Each bowl begins with glossy cubes of raw fish -tuna, salmon, shrimp, sea bream, or sea bass- layered over sticky rice and finished with a riot of colorful vegetables: creamy avocado, crisp cucumber, carrot, onion and whatever else the season calls for. Soy-based dressings, chili sauces and bright marinades bring everything together with just the right balance of salt, spice and acidity. You can build your own bowl exactly to your liking as well, adjusting textures and flavors with the precision of a chef assembling a composed dish. Noa Poké also folds the same fresh fillings into oversized burritos and fluffy Japanese-style sandos.

For Cod Burgers at “Food Str”

Hidden along Kalamiótou Street, Food Str is the kind of burger joint you could easily walk past. Among the usual comfort-food suspects, two seafood burgers stand out as unexpected favorites. The first, simply called the Fish Burger, pairs crisp breaded cod with beetroot and mayonnaise inside a subtly sweet carob bun. Its spicier sibling turns up the heat with iceberg lettuce, chili sauce and mayonnaise, creating something closer to a late-night guilty pleasure with surprisingly refined balance. There’s also a classic English-style fish and chips on the menu, golden and reassuring in all the right ways.

For Fish Sandwiches at “Atlantikos”

In the heart of Psyrri, Atlantikos’ fish sandwich is the Mediterranean answer to the British fish-and-chips sandwich: warm, comforting and gloriously messy. You’ll find it in two versions, one filled with delicate sea bass fillet, the other with grilled calamari, both tucked inside soft Cypriot pita bread. Tomato, onion, grilled zucchini and either mustard sauce or homemade mayonnaise, add freshness and richness in equal measure. Wrapped in parchment paper and foil, the sandwiches are designed to be eaten however street food should be: seated casually at a tiny table or devoured straight from your hands while wandering through the alleys of Psyrri.
