Simple tips to help you beat the heat, skip the traps and enjoy the city.
Athens is chaotic, but that’s part of its charm. The city mixes ancient history, graffiti, loud scooters and rooftop cocktails all in one. If something feels a bit messy, that’s normal, it’s not disorganization, it is character. However, to navigate this mix of life with ease, there are a few key do’s and don’ts every traveler should keep in mind.
DO
Embrace early mornings and late evenings
Athens gets extremely hot in summer, often above 38°C.
– Visit archaeological sites early
– Plan long lunches or breaks during peak heat (2-5 p.m.)
– Evenings are magical, locals come out, streets fill with life and temperatures drop
If you only remember one thing: Athens is a “split-day” city in summer.
Respect historic sites (especially the Acropolis)
The city is basically an open-air museum.
– Follow rules at sites like the Acropolis and Ancient Agora
– Don’t climb restricted ruins for photos (even if others do)
– Wear proper shoes; marble is slippery and uneven
Small detail: guards will stop you if you cross boundaries.
Use public transport (It is safe and efficient)
Athens has a surprisingly good metro system.
– Clean, modern and easy to navigate
– Direct line from the airport to the city center
– Tickets are inexpensive
Just keep an eye on your belongings in crowded stations like Monastiraki or Syntagma
Explore neighborhoods beyond the CENTER
Some of the best parts of Athens are outside the obvious tourist zones:
Plaka – charming old-town streets, cafés, souvenirs (touristy but beautiful)
Monastiraki – flea market, street life, rooftop views
Koukaki and Pagrati – more local, relaxed, great food
Eat like a local (and don’t rush meals)
Greek dining culture is slow and social.
– Expect relaxed service, no one is trying to push you out
– Try tavernas instead of only tourist restaurants
– Order multiple small dishes to share
Must-try: souvlaki, moussaka, fresh seafood and Greek salads with proper feta
Dress comfortably but respectfully
Athens is casual, but it’s still a city with cultural expectations.
– Light clothes for heat are fine
– For churches or monasteries, avoid overly revealing outfits
– Comfortable walking shoes are essential (much walking is involved)
Take advantage of sunset viewpoints
Athens has incredible sunset spots:
– Lycabettus Hill (panoramic city view)
– Philopappos Hill near the Acropolis
– Rooftop bars in central Athens
Sunset and the Acropolis lighting, an unforgettable combination
DON'T
Ignore pickpocket awareness in crowded areas
Athens is generally safe, but like many European capitals:
– Be careful in metro stations and busy tourist zones
– Keep bags zipped and in front of you
– Avoid leaving phones on café tables near sidewalks
Hotspots for petty theft: Monastiraki Square and metro lines at rush hour
Assume taxis always use meters
Most are honest, but mistakes happen.
– Always check the meter is running
– Use apps like Free Now or Uber (Uber in Athens usually connects to licensed taxis)
– Agree on long rides in advance if needed
Trust “menu pushers” in tourist traps
Especially near major attractions:
– Be cautious of restaurants with people aggressively inviting you in
– Check prices before sitting down
– Look for places with locals eating inside
Forget hydration (this is serious in summer)
The heat can be intense.
– Carry water at all times
– Refill bottles when possible
– Use sunscreen even in the city, not just the beach
