Jasmine in full fragrance, Judas trees in bloom, geraniums blazing red, and soon enough, bougainvillea will make its appearance. Athenian courtyards may not be the countryside, but they come remarkably close: sun-drenched, flower-filled, welcoming, and, most importantly, home to some truly memorable food. What better way to welcome May?
Ama Lachi
This is the first place that comes to mind whenever the conversation turns to gardens and greenery -flowers spilling over corners, cats stretched out lazily on the stone paving, and, of course, seriously good food. Ama Lachi doesn’t just boast one of the loveliest courtyards in Exarchia, arguably in all of central Athens; it also has a rare quality: it seems to get better with age.
The menu features hearty legumes, traditional Cretan skioufichta pasta, and a thoughtful selection of cheeses sourced from across Greece. The grilled meat patties with roasted potatoes are a must. And when the bill arrives, it feels just right, fair, unpretentious and entirely honest.

Tavernier

This courtyard feels like an extension of a family home, which, in itself, is something quite rare. How many restaurants can truly claim that kind of warmth and authenticity? There are trees, flower-filled pots, climbing plants and in one corner, a wood-fired oven that lends the food its distinctive, unmistakable depth of flavor. Think slow-cooked giant beans, silky eggplants in olive oil, and those timeless stuffed vegetables that never go out of style. Then come the richer dishes: tender beef cheeks, lamb, goat, and a deeply satisfying, lovingly made pastitsio. It’s the kind of meal you’ll genuinely savor from start to finish.

To Lokali

If you find yourself wandering through Psyrri and catch the scent of jasmine in the air, there’s really only one place you can be and it’s this courtyard. A Judas tree here, a mulberry tree there and right in between, you, taking it all in while nibbling on fried okra (don’t make that face, they’re excellent) and sipping on an impeccably balanced gin and tonic. There’s plenty more on offer, everything delicious, but what truly sets it apart is the feeling that you’ve somehow slipped into a holiday, right in the middle of the city.

Atlas

Let me share a little secret: for me, this café serves the best food in all of Kypseli. And it doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. It spreads its tables out across a small, lush green square right in front and absolutely makes the most of it: golden fried potatoes, rich bougiourdi, traditional froutalia, sausages and small grilled steaks, but also my personal favorite: beef with eggplant purée, served in a clay pot and topped with a flaky kouro dough crust. Pure poetry. And the prices are just as appealing.

Saita

I find myself coming back to this tavern often, and every single time, like it’s the first, I’m struck by just how good it is. “You might be the last truly authentic tavern in Plaka”, I once told them, and honestly, it feels exactly like that. Whatever you order is delicious (even the moussaka!) and the prices are almost unbelievable. Perfectly cooked burgers, proper golden fries, tender lamb that melts in your mouth, all served at sunlit tables along a pedestrian street in Plaka.

Thalassinos

Flowers and greenery everywhere you look, with a mulberry tree standing proudly in the corner. Soft pink walls and mint-colored tables set the tone, while cobblestones run beneath your feet and the scent of fresh fish drifts through the air. In the courtyard of Thalassinos, you could easily imagine yourself in a seaside village. The food matches the setting: garlic-infused shrimp pies, a different take on calamari with pesto sauce, finely cut crispy fries, and lakerda you’ll want to lick your fingers for. Of course, there’s also fresh fish and plenty more -you’ll soon find your own favourites.

Plyta

On the little-known square of Agios Artemios, two star chefs, Periklis Koskinas and Yiannis Loukakis, joined forces, and the result is a restaurant that’s always (delightfully) packed. It doesn’t really matter whether you go for the wood-fired lamb, the liver, the chickpeas, or any of the other crowd favourites on the menu. Everything is solid. But there’s one thing you absolutely cannot skip: the galaktoboureko. If you do, I say I won’t speak to you ever again.

To Gidi

May Day practically calls for an outing, so listen to it and get in the car heading to Metamorfosi. That’s where you’ll find spring itself and also To Gidi (the two go hand in hand, really). This legendary meat tavern celebrates May with its “May Day Goat Feast” (their words, not mine), a proper Greek-style party loaded with grilled meats. It starts after 3 p.m., and the rule is simple: come absolutely hungry.

Mantania

A truly enormous courtyard (it takes up about half a city block) and overflowing with greenery -trees, pots and plants everywhere you turn. It feels like a village square, with gravel crunching underfoot and a touch of nostalgia too (there’s even a kiosk straight out of the 1950s). You’ve likely never seen a courtyard quite like this. It serves brunch, drinks and plenty of dishes to nibble on. It’s the kind of place you simply have to visit.

Teras (monster)

It’s a café, a bar and a restaurant all in one. It serves excellent omelettes and even better cocktails. But it doesn’t stop there; it also hosts workshops, exhibitions, screenings and seminars. Teras is many things, just not a “monster”, despite its name. And tucked away within it lies a courtyard of the kind you instantly envy and quietly dream of having for yourself one day.
